It works with Internet Explorer and other browsers, as movies, iTunes, and games I have installed on my computer. Is this yet another problem with Adobe or is it something wrong with my computer? And what do I do? Chad Mosley 11/7/2013, 12:32 น. Chrome just updated recently (to version 28.0.1500.71 m that Cathryn originally referenced), and there was also a recent Windows update.

It's possible that neither of those things is the culprit, especially since my Chrome is still working fine (knock on wood). But some of your functions might have been reset. Make sure that under (Windows) Control Panel Network and Internet Internet Options Advanced tab, scroll down to 'Multimedia' and make sure that 'Play sounds in web pages' is checked. Also check some of the pages/functions that have NOT been playing, and make sure that if there is a separate slide bar for sound, that it is turned up, as well. Also, be sure your computer sound is actually turned up.
I know a couple of you said you checked that, but if someone else is just joining this thread and hasn't, that would obviously be the first step. Iammisskitteh 12/7/2013, 15:11 น. I had the same issue this is what I did.
I have a Windows 7 OS. Keep the Chrome browser open 2. Click the speaker Icon on the bottom right side of your computer 3. Click on Mixer 4. You will get Device - Speaker, Application - System Sound, Google Chrome Note: If you do not see Google chrome in the mixer, just open any new tab in chrome, go to youtube and play a video and check the mixer again it should appear now (it did for me).
Check if Chrome is muted, if it is then raise the sound level. It should work now. Mudwoman 7/10/2013, 18:22 น. Chrome is not muted in my mixer and volume is full on there. I have cleared my cache and rebooted. The sound option is ticked in Media options in Internet in Control Panel. The video on Chrome is not muted.
But still there is no sound in Chrome!!!!:( I notice when I am playing a video in Firefox, Adobe Flash Player appears in the mixer as well as Firefox. When I am playing a video in Chrome, Adobe Flash Player does NOT appear in the mixer. Could it be that there is something clashing with Flash Player in the latest Chrome? If so, does anyone know how I can check what that might be and uninstall whatever it is? GrahamADragon 1/11/2013, 17:15 น.
This happened to me today, and I had no clue why Chrome wasn't playing audio but all other applications were. This is how I fixed it. I'm on a Mac, but I believe this has nothing to do with your operating system, unless it's a mixer issue as was the solution for some. Take a look at this page: It seems that two versions of Adobe's flash player had been downloaded, and Chrome was attempting to use both of them.
This is not possible, so one must be disabled. Make sure you click the +Details button on the right hand side of your plug-ins window to see the multiple versions. The first one I disabled did not remedy the problem, so I re-enabled it and disabled the other. The problem was instantly fixed.
Hopefully this can help most people out. Yesenia Bonilla, 8:18 น. Dear MUDWOMAN. PLEASE READ THE POSTS. I have suffered through this for 4 D$%# months now and I am getting sick of it.
EVERYTHING BUT CHROME WOKS JUST FINE (and yes that includes the relative memory and CPU hogs Explorer and Firefox, as well as more than a dozen independant video players and music players). I have tried more than a dozen 'suggestions' all to no avail. DID I SAY IT IS ONLY CHROME!!! All started with a maintenance update that started WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!!! No sound in Chrome since (and yes I DID let it run when it started) mudwoman, 10:13 น. Daniel Cloer: Since this is your first post ever, I truly have no idea what I might have posted that has you in such a snit. But if you are still experiencing this problem, and you have not tried this already, I recommend that you open Chrome, and then open something on line that has sound involved (like a YouTube video).
Then go to your sound mixer, and there should be a Chrome selection there. If it's muted, then unmute it and see if that helps.
If that does not work (or has not worked), I suggest you peruse this thread further for other people's ideas, because there are a lot of people here with good hearts who are spending their valuable time trying to help people with what must be a horribly frustrating situation. If every now and then one of us posts something that seems to you to be clueless, it is not because we are totally ignorant and worthless collections of flesh and bone, but rather because we are putting ourselves out there and trying to help, and the odds are that every now and then we'll swing and miss. So next time you are tempted to vent your spleen in a conversation that, up until that moment you have had no constructive part of, please count to 10 and ask yourself if you're about to make the world a better place by doing so. Britney sell, 15:41 น.
I did two things to resolve the problem in about 60 seconds. I'm using Windows 7. I did the volume mixer thing, but Chrome didn't show up in either browser. I probably could have tried a few more iterations/sequences to see if this is all I needed to do.
After I didn't see Chrome show up in the mixer. I followed someone else's advice to see if two versions of Adobe Flash were in my add/change/remove programs.
I have Adobe Flash 11 and had Flash MUI 10. I uninstalled the MUI version. Then, I pulled up YouTube in Chrome and could see Chrome in the mixer. TheSinisterApathy 9/12/2013, 5:53 น. I know many people are finding the answer is that their sound mixer is muting Google Chrome for some reason. In a case like that the answer is simple - just un -mute it. Unfortunately, that is not my problem.
The mixer clearly shows Chrome is not muted. But still no sound appears from any YouTube clip in Chrome. I can get sound from YouTube in IE and in Firefox, and I can get sound from webinars and other non-YouTube sources in Chrome.
It just seems to be that on my computer Chrome and YouTube don't like each other and refuse to talk to one another! I think it must have been a Chrome update that did this to me, but I have no idea which one. And also I haven't set any restore points for years (not even sure how to do so in Windows 7, which is my operating system) so I can't go back to a stage before this happened (even if I could remember when that was!).
So far none of the answers on this thread have addressed my issue - but perhaps that is because my problem is unique. I just wish I could find an answer. In the meantime my only workaround is to stop using Chrome whenever I want to view YouTube. If anyone from Google is monitoring this thread please note! Cavertim 9/12/2013, 7:13 น.
Dear Graham, Like you this proposed solution did nothing for me. Thank you to all who proposed it. The solution at least matched the symptoms and was reasonable (and didn't start with something like '. Is you laptop battery charged?' Which is only slightly less insulting than '. Try a cold boot'. None of the suggestions fixed my issue and I still do not know what the problem was or how it occurred.
I had checked the Browser Mute long ago; but I reset it anyway with various combinations of re-starting Chrome with it off and on just to see if some setting had become 'out-of-sync' with reporting, unlikely but possible. I had to completely Un-Install Chrome removing all settings and Re-Install it. Had this not worked, I was prepared to completely remove this unstable browser from my system permanently. I still suffer from Shockwave crashes twice a week (and YES I have been to that thread and tried those suggestion to no avail) GrahamADragon 9/12/2013, 12:24 น. I've been running chrome on my PCs for years.
Never had a problem with an update until now. Anybody from the Chrome dev team aware of this issue yet? Who's brilliant idea was it to set an add-on to the windows sound mixer to a mute default? Then again, who at Microsoft had the brilliant idea to set sound mixer settings individually for applications? Stupid ideas never cease to creep up to complicate needlessly the lives of the endusers.

I have lost hours searching for an answer to this. I shudder to think at the collective loss of time we all suffered. Kudos to whoever originally discovered this new setting. 20 years using windows, 1st time I've seen a mute setting for an application in the mixer! THAT'S NOT ITS PLACE!!!! You want one, it should be in the application's settings or preferences and should be set at 20%, NOT AT MUTE!!!
I fully understand Mr. Cloer's frustration and share it fully and wholeheartedly, however it's directed at the two aforementioned geniuses that caused this problem to begin with (hope they burn in digital hell) Thanks to all those patient souls that helped solve this mystery (or should I say misery?) For the droves that don't know about this solution yet, I hope an update to this bugged (not the first word that comes to mind) update is coming soon! LarryT559, 3:28 น. I had the same problem. I was advised (more than once I'm afraid) to check the volume control on the task bar. I did so, repeatedly. It indicated the volume was set at 95% so I assumed all was well.
If you click on Mixer it shows volume settings for individual devices or applications. There was one with the Chrome logo. It was set at 95% but it was also muted out down at the bottom. I took the mute off and everything started working like it should have. Hope this helps. Jason Stiles, 16:13 น. I think I have finally found a kind of answer, or at least a workaround, which may help others like me who have already checked their mixer settings and noted there is not a problem there.
When the video allows me to access volume settings by hovering over the bottom of the video screen (most do, although some bright sparks disable this in their embedding) I check the volume setting there. I have found it is always set to zero, so I just slide it up to 100%. A similar solution to the mixer solution, but in yet another place. It is still a bit of a pain, as it means I miss usually the first second of play unless I move it back to the beginning, but at least it means I can now watch videos in Chrome. What is still a mystery to me is why that particular sound setting now always defaults to zero (not muted, just zero on the sound setting) whereas it never used to do this. Hairstyles213, 11:03 น. I have a really funny feeling that all this started when Facebook decided to have those stupid videos on the newsfeed AutoPlay.
I just went to my newsfeed and a video had been posted. It was playing, but the sound was muted on the actual video. I panicked and looked at my mixer to see. But since I uninstalled and re-installed Chrome, it hasn't flipped back to mute yet. I'd be surprised if everyone that is having this issue with Chrome doesn't use Facebook.
It is the ONLY thing that was different on my end when the trouble started. Sarah Marrie Burge 1/1/2014, 6:04 น. Equally hurray and mega thanks!!!- but it was so frustrating to figure out who coolcat and the one under him was responding to - Hey - don't usually have time to add 'thank you feed back' to these posts ones I run through a gigantic morass of technical queries to get to the bottom of an issue but did here for 3 reasons: 1) What i said above 2) What someone said below that enabled me to figure the solution - Reinstall Google, then GO TO YOUTUBE, play a video then go to the windows sound mixer (lower right -hand corner) and UNMUTE YOUTUBE!!! 3) What mudwoman said below really cracked me up and YES I want to make the world a better place!!!:) (ไม่รู้จัก) 5/1/2014, 9:36 น. Go to a website with sound, such as, and once the video is playing, go to the volume control on the lower right of your screen and click on it. You will get the sound mixer Click on the word 'Mixer' and you will get something like this: The setting under the Chrome icon will likely be muted. Click on it, and unmute it. That does not address the issue of it re-muting itself, and I've asked for more help on that, but if this works for any of you, it will be a step forward, at least. Please also let us know: 1) what antivirus do you use? 2) what other anti-malware, including free programs, do you use?
3) have you tried? 4) have you cleared your? 5) Is Adobe Flash enabled or disabled in your? 6) is Chrome your default browser? Bluejbird410989 15/1/2014, 17:22 น. Okay IF YOU WANNA KNOW HOW TO FIX IT LOOK HERE.
Okay I have a Toshiba laptop so I don't know if this works on other peoples computer but anyways I went to the volume tab at the bottom right and click on it. Then under that is says MIXER click on that then scroll to the side where it shows Chrome or Internet Explorer (Which ever is not working for you) and bring the volume up cause its most likely down. And Voila there you go. So summary, (Volume Tab thingy.
It's not simply a Windows setting. It's a Windows + Chrome setting. You have to be sure to have something with sound playing and then be sure to click on the Sound Mixer link. Sorry to be redundant, if you've gone all the way through that, but just want to be clear that it's not just adjusting your Windows volume. But as there are numerous other folks who do not have this issue, it is not strictly a Chrome thing. Some of the other theories are a conflict with antivirus or malware programs.
Wish I had a more definitive answer for you. Oluwaseyifunmi Sunmola 6/3/2014, 13:37 น. JJAC2843: In answer to your question 'Are there folks who get sound from Chrome? Maybe they know a tweak, or maybe Google set stuff up so it won't work if you have some other products installed - for example, my PC is a HP laptop. This behavior looks a lot like a compatibility issue.' I am having no problems with my Sony, Toshiba or Dell laptops. You might want to check with HP to see if they've had a rash of such issues.
Since HP makes one of Google's front-line Chromebooks, I would think that Google and HP would want to play nice, so I doubt that either party would want to build in any incompatibility issues. Also, a cursory check of HP forums does not show that this is a burning issue for HP customers. Let us know if you learn anything. JJAC2843 6/3/2014, 23:36 น.
If that is the case, then how come Chrome is the ONLY BROWSER that has this problem. Sound is fine on all other browsers - Firefox, IE, Dolphin, Puffin.
Sure it is Windows 8 plus Chrome, but the solution must be on the Chrome end, or possibly the PC. The PC is a 64 bit HP with Intel Core and Win 8.1. If this is not happening to everyone, then how rare is it, and what are the commonalities among those that have the problem? What are the common fixes row 64 bit Win 8.1 configurations? What are the deep troubleshooting steps? JJAC2843 6/3/2014, 23:50 น.
To make sure it is a Chrome problem, ensure that sound works on other browsers (i.e. Firefox, Safari, Explorer). Check sound mixer or audio settings - it is possible for your computer sound to be on but Chrome muted, and the only place this shows is the Sound Mixer (on Win, right click on your Audio icon in the tray) Next click on 'Mixer' If there is a muted icon next to Chrome click on it to unmute it.
Thanks @Mudwoman for the screenshots!. Ensure using latest version of Chrome (type chrome://version into your address bar). Try.
Update sound drivers as some audio issues are the result of a conflict outside of Chrome. If you are using Windows, please try this to see if the steps may help. I found this solution online; worked for my win 7x64 system. My problem was that I had sound on everything including Netflix in Chrome, except for YouTube videos and Adobe Creative tutorials.
Apparently it is a Flash feature that disabled audio for Flash videos. It is explained step by step and very easy. No idea why Flash would install something that disables sound. This may not solve problems with no sound at all. Netflix runs Microsoft Silverlight and had no problems on my machine with Chrome, ver 34.0.1847.116 ( Official Build 260972 ) m.
The same thing suddenly started happening to me and it left me pretty confused too. A little further down this thread someone suggested that I take a look at Chrome's plugins. So I typed ' chrome://plugins' into Chrome and poked around a little bit. I noticed Unity Player which I had installed recently to play a game and wondered if that might be the culprit. So I disabled it and restarted Chrome. Suddenly the sound was working in Chrome again. So if you have a sound problem, you should definitely take a look at your plugins to see if there is anything similar that might interfere with Chrome's handling of sound.
Govinda Prasad Adhikari 20/4/2014, 17:07 น. I can't get anything on Chrome to 'speaker fill' or use 5.1 or 7.1 (which my system is configured for, and EVERYTHING else works and fills the speakers properly). Any video or audio does NOT use all of my speakers, only right and left.
I've checked ALL my system settings, and audio settings, rolled back drivers, reinstalled drivers, you name it. I'm a Network Engineer, as well as a Microsoft Partner, and have been working with PCs and servers and all types of audio equipment for 20+ years, so I know what I'm doing. It's a Chrome issue, I'm completely sure of it. Please advise. Mudwoman 2/5/2014, 8:54 น. Actually, I found the reason for my issue.
It's because I have FL Studio which I run with a software sound driver called Asio4All because that makes it run way better. Unfortunately, that only allows FL Studio run through it, so whenever I start FL Studio it will shut down any other audio playing on the system. Why it does this I don't know (I only recently switched from Windows XP and Asio4All and the default sound driver worked perfectly well together), but luckily I know it is not actually Google Chrome's problem.
The happening after some while is probably just me starting up FL Studio and having Asio4All kick in. Luckily, I also found a toggle in the audio settings of FL Studio that just shuts off its audio when you minimize it, so that you can resume other audio you were playing.
It won't work for things that were playing audio beforehand, but hey, it's something. Initial internet digging found that I could restore the sound by going to my Device Manager, clicking on the sound driver and clicking 'Scan for hardware changes' and this would restore my sound. However, after doing this I was able to play a song on youtube, but no sound was coming from a video on. Additionally, when I opened the mixer, I found no Chrome Sounds icon.
Just a 'Device' and 'Applications' sound bar. After further digging, another forum suggested creating a 'missing.reg' file in notepad by copying and pasting some code that a User had posted, and then after saving, clicking on this and 'running' it to add itself to the registry. The link for that forum post is here.
The error message mentioned by Horatio - which I also see in the same circumstances - says that another application is using the sound kit - but I have been quite unable to identify what that might be. I've searched the system using Task Manager, Programs & Features, Extensions/Add-ons in the browsers, Chrome Plug-ins - all to no avail. I use a pretty much vanilla Windows 8 laptop system, with no standalone media players other than Windows own, no Skype, no external chat clients - nothing that ought to be grabbing my mike & speakers. I'm having this same problem.
For about the last year or so, playing sound from youtube/other audio in Chrome is entirely hit and miss. Some days it will not work at all, and other days it's only specific videos/pages. They all work perfectly in IE.
I have checked the volume mixer and only 3 options are available (system speakers, applications and windows media player) but all are on max volume. This is super frustrating, and obviously rebooting isn't working either since it's been a constant problem every time I start windows. Boskamp 28/8/2014, 16:01 น.
All: This is an understandably frustrating situation. The solution of checking the volume slider while on YouTube (or other sound-producing site) has been posted several times in this thread, including carvertim's post above, and Sarah Dee's post pinned at the. Please try this before adding to this thread, and if you have tried it, please note this as you post (so we don't ask you). There are other possible solutions other people have posted, including clearing cache and cookies, and checking your sound settings in Windows, which are also good basic troubleshooting steps. But for some reason that's not yet known, Chrome gets muted in some tabs, and this solutions seems to have worked for many people. Annette Titter 16/9/2014, 11:04 น.
I am not a computer expert but I managed to get sound back on Chrome. It took me ages. I had sound on IE,Firefox, but not Chrome so I couldn't listen to any YouTube videos. I had Flash updated to the most recent version already as well but I still managed to fix it though. Firstly, go to chrome://plugins (in the address bar) then look at what you have.
I made sure that Widevine Content Decryption Module is enabled along with Java and other plugins that dealt with Flash. On plugins, go to the 'Details' section (top right) then expand 'Flash' and look for the code NPSWF32.dll make sure this file is enabled and disable the other one (if there is another one).
Now, click on the sound icon located in the tray (bottom right hand corner of screen) and then proceed to the mixer. You should now see a Chrome volume option which is likely to be muted. Worked for me. If this doesn't work don't blame me, I don't have a degree in Computer Science! AmaazingSusan, 19:43 น. Type chrome:plugins in the address bar to open the Plug-ins page.
On the Plug-ins page that appears, find the 'Flash' listing. To enable Adobe Flash Player, click the Enable link under its name.
To disable Adobe Flash Player completely, click the Disable link under its name. If Adobe Flash Player is enabled then disable and enable it and if its disabled then enable it. Refresh page and it worked for me. Chrome stopped playing today after windows 8 update. Happened on last update and had do the same thing. Hope this helps.
Kevin R Starkey, 17:52 น. OK I've been reading everyone's problems and ideas since last month when I reported I couldn't get any sound from anything in Chrome.
It was jumping on my mixer meter, but not on the main volume output, and no sound from the speakers. All the same games and videos played just fine in Internet Explorer, there was nothing muted on the mixer, on the videos/games themselves, in the Chrome browser, or anywhere. I had good sound from every other application. I repeat, I could even visually see the Chrome level green meter jumping in the Windows 7 mixer visual. I was racking my brain for the reason. Finally this week my son suggested I roll back my audio driver which was fully up to date. Problem Solved!
The newer audio driver must have a glitch or oversight which does not communicate properly with Google Chrome browser. I'm back to normal, and I don't notice any negative effects from using the older audio driver. Dnkmurphy, 9:44 น. I am still having issues with my sound.
I tried clearing my cache and cookies, I had already checked my mixer volume, and it is all the way turned up. I have Windows 7 and version 39 of Google chrome. I even tried resetting all of my Chrome settings. I even tried uninstalling Chrome, but it wouldn't let me because it kept saying that I had a Chrome window open, but I didn't. I would rather use Chrome than Internet explorer, but it looks like I don't really have much choice if I can't figure out how to fix this audio issue. Mudwoman 12/1/2015, 15:34 น.
I have now successfully uninstalled google chrome and reinstalled it, and I still have no audio for Chrome. The audio mixer acts like it is playing sound for Chrome, but it isn't. It is turned all the way up, and absolutely nothing happens.
I may just have to get rid of Google Chrome for good because I am really sick of this. I liked it because it seemed to be faster at downloads etc, but without sound, that doesn't do me any good.
The sound used to work, but for some reason a couple weeks ago, it just quit. No explanation at all. It also seems like the explanations on here don't do any good for whatever my problem is. If anyone knows what really might be wrong. Dnkmurphy 14/1/2015, 13:28 น. I posted another post because this answer is not applicable to me.
First of all, I am using a Mac which doesn't have a mix setting at all; second, all other apps are working fine but Chrome with USB DAC and Airplay (It still works using internal speakers); third, when I set flash player plugin to those provided by Adobe it works. Therefore we can know 1) it's not a system issue because all other apps are working fine; 2) it's not a web page issue for the same reason as 1); 3) it's not a setting issue because under certain circumstances (using internal speaker or using Adobe flash plugin) Chrome is working. I am using Yosemite - possibly Apple changed something beneath the OS but I couldn't associate these 2 things together because I don't know if it started happening when I switched to Yosemite. Other apps like Safari, MPlayerX, iTunes etc. All work fine.
Even it works when I play videos using Flash player plugin provided by Adobe (note it doesn't work if I am using embedded plugin in Chrome). Sometimes Youtube also doesn't work because Chrome decides to play video using HTML5 player instead of Flash player.

Hi Sarah, I am trying to watch videos from my local files to cast to my chromecase but the speaker icon in chrome is greyed out and showing as muted, I can't click it to unmute.
All other browsers work fine. Oddly i can't seem chrome in in the Volume Mixer. I have checked pluggins and they all seem fine, i have reinstalled chrome, i have cleared cache, cookies etc, i have updated flash player, i have tried incognito, updated sound drivers.i am at a loss, please help.
I am running Google Chrome 40.0.2214.115 ( Official Build) m. I was also suddenly getting no audio from Chrome browser even in incognito mode. I spent a couple days trying to fix this. I think it happened after I played with the Chrome synch settings. Windows system sounds worked fine, it was just audio from the Chrome browser. The sound mixer shows the green bar moving as if sound is being produced by the Chrome browser window, but nothing.
IE browser works fine. The Netflix Window 8 app works.
Windows system sounds worked great. I reinstalled Chrome (several times) and the audio driver Realtek HD on my ASUS Q502LA Notebook. I tried turning off or deleting various plug-ins and extensions in Chrome. I deleted all the Chrome profiles. I used CC Registry Cleaner and Malwarebytes. I restored Windows to a previous checkpoint.
